Ein Antenne-Bayern-Podcast ––– Episode 7: On tuesday, September 5th 1972, I enlisted myself as a volunteer for a special raid at the airfield Fürstenfeldbruck. Around 7 o’clock in the evening me and some colleagues were flown in a helicopter from Munich to Fürstenfeldbruck. We were instructed to free the hostages out of a Lufthansa air plane that should be standing there, waiting for them to board. For this purpose we were dressed in fitter’s overalls of yellow, green and blue color. We had to repeat our request for weapons several times before being equiped with P38 pistols from the city police and the German army.

Was wird jetzt passieren? Sie sagten: Wir haben einen Plan. Wir wollen, dass die beiden Anführer der Palästinenser zum Flugzeug kommen. Zur der Lufthansa-Maschine, die bereits auf dem Flugplatz Fürstenfeldbruck wartet. Und dann haben wir 14 Polizisten im Flugzeug - die schießen und töten sie. Wir hoffen, dass die anderen Terroristen dann aus den Helikoptern kommen (die sind ja zusammen mit den Geiseln geflogen). Dann können wir die auch erwischen, und das wars. Wir haben denen zwar gesagt, dass sie mit dem Flugzeug ausfliegen können - wir werden sie aber nicht aus Deutschland rauslassen.

When doing research for this podcast I spent weeks in the Staatsarchiv München. It was kind of my second home. Every morning I entered this massive building next to Munich Odeonsplatz, went upstairs, entered the reading hall and took my place. On the table always already stacks of files. Usually I occasionally grabbed one and startet scrolling through the pages. Most files were fairly chaotic. Completed forms, letters typed on type writers, faded copies of decades old telexes, and so forth. Browsing this stuff is fairly tiring. Most of it is irrelevant. I read lots of more or less meaningless detail. And then again turned a page. And on a sudden realized: This here is different. Exciting. Telling an important part of the story.

In this case: I stumbled upon a long and detailed report written by one of these 14 police men who were in the plane with these yellow, green and blue overalls. One of these who where instructed to overturn the terrorists in the plane, one of these volunteers the police chiefs were looking for.

And now I was sitting in this archive reading room and had this report in hand. Seeing it was classified until 2041 but being allowed to take notes so that I started typing all of it into my laptop computer. The name of this police officer: Heinz M.. Oder seinen ermordeten Kameraden zu sehen. Man wusste ja nicht, was wirklich mit ihm passiert war, nur, dass er erschossen war. Und jetzt ist er im Helikopter. Wohin führt das?

We searched for shelter somewhere in the area, and behind a corner of the tower was the spot where I hid. I couldn't see all that happened from that place. First, one terrorist after another left the helicopter and both came closer. Both of them were armed with machine guns.

Not far from the helicopters the air plane was standing. It was illuminated as well. The helicopters stood approximately 10 meters apart and aligned in parallel. Our helicopter was piloted by a pilot and a co pilot. After landing Issa went out through the front door at the right side. He went around the helicopter and took position right between them. I left through the door at the left side and also one of my comrades. Issa instructed the Israelis to wait in the helicopter. The pilot remaind in as well.

After talking briefly they went to the Lufthansa jet plane. At the same time the helicopter crews stepped out and also one more terrorist from each of the helicopters, armes as well with machine guns. From the perspective of the tower the terrorists could not be seen clearly because the helicopter crews stood in their way. The two other terrorists went in the plane and then returned to the helicopters.

The time now: Another police chief climbed on the tower platform – Georg Wolf, head of the operation. He is lying between two of the sharp shooters. There is a reason why he is lying there. The police doesn’t have walkie talkies in Fürstenfeldbruck, for whatever reason. Wolf orders the two officers next to him to shoot as Issa and Tony return to the helicopters. They shoot.
