The terror recruits traveled to Munich in different ways - just shortly before the attack took place. They had a few days in Munich to get used to each other. This was the beginning of the last step in a bigger plan that had startet over a year earlier in the middle east. About which the Palestinians had decided at the very top of their hierarchy. Which brought the master mind Abu Daoud to travel to Germany. Who then brought the officers Issa and Tony with him. The two men who had recruited the team members in Shatila, Beirut and elsewhere, who trained them in shooting with a Kalachnikow, who sent them traveling to Munich and picked them up at the agreed meeting points. Three of these recruits survived the attack. They were the only survivors. German police arrested them. They were taken into remand and spent some weeks in Bavarian prisons. Then they were released and set free. You might think: What? Freed? Completely set free? No prosecution? No court cast? No verdict? Never happened anything like that? Right, that’s it. As a matter of fact it is so weird that we’re are going to tell you about it in detail in upcoming episodes. But today we are talking about the arrivals of the terrorists in Munich. Their last days and hours before the attack. My sources: The interrogation protocols of the three surviving terrorists, investigation reports and secret service’s notes.

He spent almost one more week in a hotel room in Damascus. Unlike Samer and Abu Alala. These two went on their travels on the same day. But they took a very different route and a different transportation system.

He handed Abu Alala and me a ticket for the ship to Tripolis and a flight ticket from Tripolis to Rome, each. He also gave us each US Dollars in a value equivalent to 1000 Syrian Lira. Issa was already on his way to Munich but I don’t know how he got there. I guess he was flying because he had to be in Munich faster then us.

And it seems as if the German investigators just couldn’t imagine that the terrorists were able to fly back and forth between Germany and the middle east. Compared to this Samer’s and Abu Alala’s travel went very smoothly, at least the first leg.

They handed him a passport, 50 Syrian Lira, 50 US Dollars und 700 German Marks. He remembered: I showed my US dollars to the driver and he took ten dollars for the ride. This was fairly much but we couldn’t communicate. After arriving at the railway station I asked for a connection to Munich at the information desk. I was told that there would be a direkt connection next morning, August 30th, six ò clock. I spent the night in a hotel nearby and paid seven German Marks for the stay.

He pays 40 German Marks and again is told the train would depart next morning at six. However, when came to the station he was not successful in finding it. He again asked for the right connection and is told that there was another train departing at 2 pm. So this is the one he took.

He remembered: While at 2 pm on August 30th in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, the train with terrorist Al Dnawy rolls on, the Egyptian ship Sudan approaches the coast line near the Libyan capital of Tripolis. On board his two terrorist comrades Samer and Abu Alala. This was barely a week before the Munich massacre. At 4 pm the Sudan docked in the harbor of Tripolis. Samer and Abu Alala unboarded.

We had a double room for the both of us. We had to stay the night in Tripolis because our flight tickets had been issued for a flight to Rome on August 31st. We were flying in a Boeing, I guess it was a 727. After landing in Rome we immediately took a taxi for the railway station. Around 5 pm our train to Munich departed. We arrived in Munich on September 1st at six ò clock in the morning.

He remembered: At the same time no one of the Israeli team in the Olympic village in Munich had a clue of what was coming. There was - for example - Mark Slavin, the youngest of the athletes. He was probably the one in the team with the best chances for a medal, maybe gold.

They handed him a passport, 50 Syrian Lira, 50 US Dollars und 700 German Marks. He remembered: At this point I want to highlight something. It’s not just that the Israelis at that time didn’t know what the terrorists were planning. The families of the killed athletes –to this day- dont have a full picture of what happened behind the scenes 50 years ago. This is although they struggled and fought with the German authorities to release their files to at least allow them to learn and to know what happened. When I sat with Ankie Spitzer in Israel, the wife of fencer André Spitzer, we browsed through the material that I had acquired in the archives. And I was really perplexed when I found out that I had information she never heard before. In all of these 50 years!

He remembered: The fact that the Federal Republic of Germany to this day fails to deliver all of the details and the complete picture of what happened to the families of killed athletes is remarkable. But maybe this just changed. Just recently Gernmany agreed in founding a historian’s commission to collect all the material and make it accessible to the families. We have talked about these negotiations in our previously released special episode that we published on August 5th.

Abu Hassan had told us that we were going to meet Issa in a restaurant in the train station. He described how to get there and we found it right away. Once you leave the platform you are entering the main building. In it you find the restaurant on the right hand side. So we went there. We just drank a cup of coffee. Then we were waiting on the passage by the platforms next to the restaurant.

When we went into the Hotel Monachia he told us that we would stay there one night only. He then spoke in german to an elderly man at the recaption desk, who wore glasses .

Around 5: 30 or 6 pm Issa returned. He said that we would go to the Olympic stadium. We left the hotel. Since we were hungry we ate somewhere, I guess in the train station. Issa didn’t say a word about our operation and we didn’t ask. We knew that asking was forbidden. We were not in a position to ask. We took the subway to the Olympic stadium. Issa purchased the tickets for all of us. I remember that we passed five stations before we left the train.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: Visiting the olympic stadium was kind of leisure fun. They watched a game of the volleyball competition of the women, Japan versus Korea.

Around 5: Samer

Around 5: The Japanese won 3 to Zero.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: On their way back to the hotel they then passed the Olympic village und had a view on site where their operation was planned. Until then only the planners and leaders new the place, Issa, Tony and Abu Daoud. Now, for the first time, Issa showed it to the recruits.

Around 5: SAMER

Around 5: When the volleyball match was over we took the same way back which we took to get to the venue. For the first time Issa talked about details. He led us to a fence that was built around the Olympic village. He showed us a portal that we should climb over. He showed us a house, in approximately 20 meters distance, on the right side of the street. Issa said that this was the house in wchich the Israeli team resided with 26 persons. He said we invade this house on September 5th. We would enter through the back door because there would be very few people. We should then take the 26 Israelis as hostages. There would be a demand to release 200 Palestinians held bei Israel. Issa said that there also were two women in the Israeli team but somewhere at another place. We did not ask how Issa knew all this and he didn’t tell us. He said the operation would be easy.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: Then they took the subway, returned to the main station and the Hotel Monachia. Samer and Abu Alala slept for a long time.

Around 5: Akzent

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: Saturday, September 2nd. Samer and Abu Alala woke up at around 10 am. At noon the reception called and asked them to leave - since they only had the room for one night. The two check out. Abu Alala pays 63 Euros for the night. They have breakfast. Then they return to the main station and hang around. That same morning one of their other comrades had arrived there – Al Dnawy who came by train from Belgrade.

Around 5: Al Dnawy

Around 5: After my train stopped in Munich I went to a restaurant in the station. In the restaurant there was a buffet where I could stand. I ligned up to the self service and picked a half chicken, salad, as well as a piece of cake and coffee. The cashier was sitting around a corner. All in all it cost a bit under 10 German Marks.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: Al Dnawy had a few hours to kill, just as Samer and Abu Alala did. With the difference that Al Dnawy had no clue where to go for the day. He had an appointment the next day in Munich but not for the day when he arrived. So he continues to kill some time.

Around 5: Al Dnawy

Around 5: Around noon I left the main station and just walked around. I went into another restaurant but I forgot what ist called and what i ate there. During the afternoon I went on walking around.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: Problably just by coincidence his path didn’t cross the one of his comrades. When Al Dnawy walked around through the main station area in Munich Samer and Abu Alala again met their leader – in the Munich main station.

Around 5: Samer

Around 5: Around 3 o’clock Issa arrived. Together we went to a restaurant but didn’t enter. We were sitting outside on a terrace and had a cup of coffee. Then we were searching for a new hotel. Obvisiously Issa didn’t have a place for the night for us until then. After asking around in 4 or 5 hotels and not finding accommodation we went to the Hotel Augsburg around 5 pm. Issa led us on the second floor into room number 15. He already had a key for this room.

Around 5: Christoph

Around 5: They checked their new hotel room. Then Issa took the two, Samer and Abu Alala. And they went - to where? Of course, to the main station again.

Around 5: Samer

Around 5: There we met a man whom Issa introduced to us as being named Tony. This Tony should also take part in our operation. I never met him before. I don’t know when or how he travelled to Germany. From the beginning I felt that Tony and Issa knew each other well and that they had a good relationship. They looked a bit similar but I don’t know if they were brothers. To my understanding Tony must have arrived in Germany before Issa did. Tony was well versed with Germany.

Around 5: Christoph

This evening they again watched a match of the women’s volleyball competition, this time Cuba vs Germany. Cuba won 3: 0. While Al Dnawy still did what he had done all day: Killing time, hour after hour.

Then I went to another restaurant which was parted in two. In the first room there was a café and in the back room there was a normal restaurant. I took a seat in the café part and was sitting there until around 2 o’clock. Then I left and walked around until the morning came. I remained in the vicinity of the main station all the time. I didn’t sleep. I didn’t even try to find a room and a bed.

Issa then sent Al Alala shopping – four kilograms of peaches, four kilograms of bananas, and three cartons of cigarettes. All of the terrorists were smokers. The others should lay down and have a rest. Planned start time for the operation: Darwish and I couldn’t sleep. We stayed awake. Around 11 pm I had to ask our comrades from room number 15 to join us in room number 12. Issa and Tony opened the three suitcases. There were eight machine guns and ten hand grenades in there. The guns where wrapped in clothes. It were all yellow cotton clothes. The grenades were of American origin and the guns of Russian. For each of the guns there was a double magazine containing of two magazines taped together. Each of the magazines should hold 30 bullets but I counted them and found out that one or two were missing. This was the case with all of the magazines. Each of us received one machine gun, one double magazine and one hand grenade. Also each of us received cigarettes and fruits. They delivered the sports bags to us, for each of us a white Puma bag. Everyone then took clothes from his personal baggage and wrapped the guns into the clothes. I took two trousers and two shirts.

Issa then sent Al Alala shopping – four kilograms of peaches, four kilograms of bananas, and three cartons of cigarettes. All of the terrorists were smokers. The others should lay down and have a rest. Planned start time for the operation: We should split in two groups and take taxis to the Olympic premises. Each group should walk to a place that was marked with the number one on the sketch. At this place there was a tree. The first group should be leaded by Tony. To his group belonged Ahmad, Hussam and Afif. All others were under Issas command. These two groups should climb over the fence one after the other and go to the building’s back door. The house where the Israelis were accommodated. He said we had to go into the room at the right side. He said furthermore we shouldn’t be nervous and shoot only when urgently necessary. He didn’t say more than that.

Around 2: 30 the first group which was Tony’s left the hotel. The second followed ten minutes later. We sat into the taxi. Issa told the driver where to go. I didn’t understand because it was in German. We drove to the Olympic area but not to the building. We had to walk to the place where we should climb over the fence which took about 15 minutes. Issa knew where to go.

Around 2: What follows is a terrorist crime of historic dimension including an epic fail of police and state. We are able to reconstruct the attack that startet early in the morning of September 5th, 1972, and ended early in the morning of September 6th - almost minute by minute. And we are meeting two brave police women, whose role was highly underestimated over all these 50 years – by historians and journalists who reported about this terrorist attack. We are going to correct this within the next episodes that reconstruct the day of the attack. And we are going to break the rules usually applied to podcasts. We are going to publish three episodes for this day – a nearly minute by minute reconstruction of real time plus 50 years. The first of these three at 4 o’clock in the morning.
